==========

A site for lessons and instructional materials for learning Indian classical music for students of Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury. I have taught at University of California, Los Angeles (Indian Ethnomusicology Group), Christopher Newport University, VA (CNU World Music Ensemble), Auburn University, AL (Indian Music Ensemble) and am currently (as of 2017) at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL.

My tradition is rooted in the Vishnupur gharana of North Indian classical music with strong training in the Brahmasangeet tradition of Rabindranath Tagore’s compositions. Studied at Geetabithi Academy of Music, Kolkata from 1973-1981 and in the US with Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy, Prabha Atre and others.  My students learn the basics of raga and tala – the fundamental building blocks of Indian classical music and connect them to songs and popular compositions in multiple Indian languages (Sanskrit, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Bengali).  I am a vocalist by training and everyone starts with that in class. Individual students with training in acoustic instruments (flute, guitar, violin, sitar, veena) add to the ensemble’s sound and expression.
